The yacht will be skippered by a qualified yachtmaster, assisted by a mate who is competent to take over in the unlikely event that the skipper is indisposed. The two of them would be able to sail the boat without assistance if necessary. But we expect people joining us on these days will want to be introduced to the skills of sailing, and our crew is briefed to show everyone how to play a full part in sailing the boat. You’ll be shown how to set and trim the sails, and will be able to take the wheel of our 48ft beauty if you like. But none of this is compulsory: if you want to sit back and enjoy the sun and sights, that’s fine.

We start from Lymington, in the New Forest, or Southampton. The basic idea is to sail to and from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, on the sheltered waters of the Solent, which separates the island from the mainland. It takes about two hours each way. While in Cowes you’ll have a brief chance to explore the pubs and cool nautical clothes shops dotted along the narrow streets of this famous yachting town while our crew sets out a gourmet picnic lunch on-board. After lunch we sail back – with the pro crew taking a back seat.
